Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court
The Bench started work on 24 July 2004. It exercises all the jurisdiction of the High Court except original jurisdiction. The High Court lists its districts as Kanniyakumari, Theni, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Madurai, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli and Karur.
Madurai district courts
The official site, madurai.dcourts.gov.in, publishes an e-filing procedure for advocates, a separate one for cheque bounce cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act, and the Madras High Court's E-Filing Rules, 2020. When everything goes in as a PDF, a clean typed draft and a clear scan matter more.
Theni became its own judicial district in 2006
Madurai was divided into the Madurai and Theni judicial districts in 2006. Matters from the Theni side go to the Theni district courts, and both stay under the Madurai Bench.
Tamil below the High Court, English in it
Under Section 4-B of the Tamil Nadu Official Language Act, 1956, added in 1976, Tamil is the language of the civil and criminal courts below the High Court. The High Court works in English. So the same matter can need a Tamil draft at one stage and English papers at the next.
