Courts in Chennai
Madras High Court, principal seat
The High Court sits in Chennai under Letters Patent dated 26 June 1862, one of the three High Courts set up by royal charter. Besides appeals and writs, it has original jurisdiction over the city of Chennai. Its Madurai Bench hears matters from the southern districts, and High Court work from the rest of the state comes to Chennai.
City Civil Court
Civil suits in the city go to the City Civil Court, set up under the Chennai City Civil Court Act, 1892, first called the Madras City Civil Court Act. Its territorial jurisdiction covers the whole city. Case status and cause lists are on the eCourts district site.
Tamil below the High Court, English in it
Under Section 4-B of the Tamil Nadu Official Language Act, 1956, added in 1976, Tamil is the language of the civil and criminal courts below the High Court. The High Court works in English. So the same matter can need a Tamil draft at one stage and English papers at the next.

- No. We are not a law firm and do not appear in court. We type, draft, translate and review documents. Filing and appearing are for your advocate.
- Do I need to come to your Chennai office?
- We have no office in Chennai, or anywhere else. Everything happens on WhatsApp and phone, and you pay by a GPay request after you accept the written quote.
- My papers are in Tamil and the High Court matter is in English. Can you translate them?
- Yes, from ₹200 per page. Ask the Registry first whether it needs its own translation, because a court registry can insist on that.
