Who we are
The Legal Works is an online legal support company. We work by phone and WhatsApp, and our website is thelegalworks.in. We are not a law firm. In this policy, we and us mean The Legal Works.
We follow the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Sensitive Personal Data or Information Rules, 2011. We also follow the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, whose main duties apply from 13 May 2027.
What we collect
- Your name.
- Your phone number, and your WhatsApp number if it is different.
- The messages you send us on WhatsApp, and what you tell us on a call.
- The documents you send us, such as deeds, agreements, notices, case papers, and photos of them.
- The UPI reference number of your payment, with the amount and date.
Your documents may name other people, such as a seller, a landlord or the other side in a case. We use their details only for your matter.
We never collect your UPI PIN, bank password, card number or OTP. Do not share these with anyone, even someone who says they are from us.
We never ask for Aadhaar or PAN
We do not need your Aadhaar or PAN number for our work, and we will never ask for it.
If a document you send shows an Aadhaar or PAN number, cover the number before you send it. A masked Aadhaar, which shows only the last four digits, is fine.
If you send a full number by mistake, we delete it from our chat and our files.
Why we use your data
- To understand what you need and send you a written quote.
- To do the work you asked for, such as drafting, reviewing or translating a document.
- To share your matter with an independent advocate when your work needs one, such as for a legal opinion or a court filing.
- To send a payment request for your quote, match your payment to it, and keep our accounts.
- To answer your questions and complaints.
- To meet our duties under Indian law, such as tax and record keeping.
We use your data because you agree to it when you contact us and send us your papers. You can withdraw that consent at any time, as explained under your rights below.
We do not use your data for anything else. We do not sell it, and we do not use it for advertising.
Who sees your documents
Only two groups of people see your documents.
- The members of our team who work on your matter.
- The independent enrolled advocate who works on your matter, if it needs one.
We do not share your documents with anyone else without your written permission, unless a law, a court or a government authority requires it.
We use service providers for storage and email. They hold data for us under terms that keep it confidential, and they do not use it for their own purposes.
WhatsApp is a separate service
We talk to you on WhatsApp, which Meta runs. WhatsApp is a third party and not part of The Legal Works. What you send on WhatsApp is also covered by WhatsApp's own privacy policy.
Once your messages and documents reach us, this policy covers how we use and keep them. We never forward one client's chat or documents to another client.
How long we keep your data
We keep work files, messages and logs for at least one year after we finish your work.
After that year, we delete your data when you ask us to. We keep it longer only when a law requires it, such as tax law for payment records.
If you ask us to delete your data within the first year, we stop using it for anything the law does not require, and we delete it when the year ends.
How we protect your data
- Only the people working on your matter can open your files.
- We keep files in storage protected by passwords and access controls.
- Everyone on our team must keep client matters confidential.
No system is perfectly safe. If a breach affects your data, we will tell you without delay and report it to the authorities as the law requires.
Your rights
- Access. Ask what personal data we hold about you and how we use it.
- Correction. Ask us to correct, complete or update your data.
- Deletion. Ask us to delete your data. We do this once the one-year minimum is over, unless a law requires us to keep it.
- Withdraw consent. Tell us to stop using your data. This does not undo work done before you withdrew. If you withdraw while work is in progress, we may not be able to finish it.
- Nominate. Name a person who can use these rights for you if you die or cannot act yourself.
To use any of these rights, message us on WhatsApp, call us, or email the Grievance Officer. We may ask you to confirm who you are, but we will not ask for Aadhaar or PAN to do it.
Children
Our services are for adults. If your matter includes a child's personal data, such as a minor co-owner named in a property document, we need consent from the child's parent or lawful guardian before we use it.
Questions and complaints
Our Grievance Officer answers questions and complaints about your personal data, and requests to use your rights.
